Even though this week it feels like summer here in Indiana, we did have some chilly fall days last week and of course we know more are on their way! I remember first hearing about goji berries a few years back. They were being touted for their health benefits, and that's about all I recall. But I had no idea WHY they were called such a superfood, and I definitely did not know that it truly matters WHERE they are grown.
Over the years, I've done more research and learned so much about goji berries. And it's true that they have INCREDIBLE health benefits. From all I've been able to find, they are actually the highest source of antioxidants found in food today!
If you don't know what antioxidants are, sit tight for one second. Here's a super quick science lesson...
Free radicals are unstable atoms within the body that are missing an electron in their outer shell. Because of that, they are looking for something to grab onto to fill that electron need, and therefore they react quickly with other substances.
While the process of free radicals forming is normal, we also accelerate the process by our lifestyle - smoking, drinking alcohol, eating processed/fried foods, and being exposed to environmental toxins (which are largely unavoidable in today's society).
Additionally, as the body ages, it loses its ability to fight the effects of free radicals. Once formed, free radicals can start a chain of damaging chemical reactions. The result is more free radicals, more oxidative stress, and more damage to cells, which leads to degenerative processes, as well as "normal" aging.
Various studies and theories have connected oxidative stress due to free radicals to:
*central nervous system diseases, such as Alzheimer's and other dementias
*cardiovascular disease due to clogged arteries
*autoimmune and inflammatory disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis and cancer
*cataracts and age-related vision decline
*age-related changes in appearance, such as loss of skin elasticity, wrinkles, graying hair, hair loss, and changes in hair texture
*diabetes
*genetic degenerative diseases, such as Huntington's disease or Parkinson's
So free radicals can obviously do some pretty intense damage to the body.
BUT....
Here is where antioxidants enter the scene!! They are here to save the day, and help your body naturally fight the process of damage caused by free radicals.
Antioxidants are molecules which can safely interact with free radicals and terminate the chain reaction before vital molecules are damaged.
They are basically superheroes within your body!
